I finally got sick of watching everyone else go to GDC without me, so here’s my goal: Save up $6000 to go to GDC 2013. I have a big note on my desktop that’ll continuously remind me of how much I have left to go and there’s also a progress bar on the side of the blog so people can nag me at IGDA meetups if I need to my act together and earn some more money :P

Can I do it? I don’t really know. Theoretically yes, but whether that turns out to be a practical yes, well, I guess I’ll find that out over the next 12 months.

Hopefully see you at the next GDC! :D

It’s just a little over 4 months until IPv6 is enabled world-wide on most major sites including Google and Internode.

As you’ll probably notice, all of the sites running on the Redpoint VPS support native IPv6 (including this blog). In reality, enabling native IPv6 support is a lot less difficult than it seems.

Enable it at your Hosting Provider

Support at this level is a little less important now that CloudFlare supports transparent IPv6 across the board (so you’re site will be IPv6 even without an IPv4 address). That said, CloudFlare can only cover HTTP-based requests so if you’re doing any advanced work or exposing non-HTTP services you’ll need support from your provider.

Most providers at this point will be providing IPv6 blocks in addition to an IPv4 address. Your best bet is to check your provider’s blog or support site before searching around in your control panel (almost every provider that enables native IPv6 support is going to want to advertise that fact).

If your provider doesn’t support native IPv6 yet, demand to know why and where it’s at. If your provider has no plans or hasn’t yet begun transitioning to IPv6, I’d suggest changing providers (mainly because they’re probably not too quick on their feet when it comes to other issues like security either). We use Linode who has IPv6 enabled in all datacenters except Tokyo.

Enable CloudFlare

If you’re provider doesn’t have native IPv6 support yet but are actively transitioning to supporting IPv6 natively, you can still get ahead of the pack and have IPv6 for free on at least the HTTP-facing services.

Sign up for CloudFlare (it’s free) and follow the prompts to add your domain to CloudFlare system. Once the domain is added and you have your main subdomains enabled with the orange cloud, head to the CloudFlare settings page and turn on Automatic IPv6. Once the DNS caches around the world have updated to point your site through the CloudFlare system, you’ll see IPv6 records appear.

Check with your ISP

Above handles enabling IPv6 on your server. It’s potentially more important to ensure that your home or work connection with your ISP can handle IPv6 as well, unfortunately at least in Australia not many providers support native IPv6.

If you’re with Internode and have a IPv6-compatible router (all routers sold by Internode support IPv6), follow the instructions on this support page to enable it before World IPv6 Launch Day. If you’re a new customer for Internode, they automatically enable it for you.

So there you have it. Despite appearances, it is currently possible to get native IPv6 from your house to your server without tunneling for absolutely no cost. I would know, I get to SSH to my box over IPv6 without a single tunnel in sight!

Hey folks,

I’m heading up most of the tech organisationing for GGJ ’12 in Melbourne. If you’re not going to the jam, this blog post is useless to you, otherwise read on…

If you went to the GGJ last time you’ll remember the projector that cycled through desktops as people were jamming; I hope we can have this set up on all the machines before people even get there on Friday so it should be able to cast everyone’s desktops (though feel free to turn of the JamCast client using the tray icon if you don’t feel comfortable having your screen shown to everyone).

Like last time I’m bringing a ton of resources and engines along for people to use, if you need any of this stuff just ask me and I’ll give you the files. <del datetime="2012-01-25T07:58:43+00:00">And yes, some of these are out-of-date, I’m going to be updating the versions I have and then updating the blog entry.</del> All of the software below has been updated to the latest version.

If there’s any engines or resources missing here and you want them brought along (and don’t have the facilities to do so yourself), let me know in the comments below and I’ll add them to the USB.

Did you know over the past 12 months, I’ve had (probably well) over 17 software projects of some form? A lot of that code doesn’t end up anywhere, either it sits on my computer or is stored in a GitHub repository that no-one knows about.

That’s not saying that the code written is useless; often the code is written to solve an interesting challenge or problem. I end up with a whole bunch of code that’s probably useful for someone out there, but no-one knows about.

My old solution to this problem was simply to upload to Google Code or GitHub, but this only solves half the problem. People can access it sure, but they still don’t know it exists. Over the past few days, I’ve been setting up a site containing every project I’ve worked on, including source:

Redpoint Code is a code repository of every open-source project I’ve worked on or modified, available for everyone to use.

UPDATE: I’ve just finished uploading the source code to all of my games, including Dimension Jump and Planet Attack, to the repository.

Going forward, it’ll also be the repository for all future open source projects as well. This way, everyone can access any future developments through one site, rather than having to deal with GitHub, Google Code and other mechanisms to access it.

Enjoy the code.

So I just issued a new version of iView Alerts with support for a “watch later” queue.

It was annoying me for quite some time that I couldn’t mark a show to “watch later” and I found that without it, I was always forced to either watch a show right now, or ignore it (and usually forget that it existed by the time I could watch shows).

So yes, now you can hit the “Later” link instead of “Watch” and it’ll go into a list of saved shows which is accessible from the new browser icon. This is what it looks like:

If you already have iView Alerts installed you should get the new version soon automatically via Chrome’s updating system. If you don’t have iView Alerts but think it looks awesome, you can get it from the Chrome Web Store.

There’s nothing like writing blog posts at midnight, 5 hours before you have to get up to travel into Melbourne.. :)

As you all well know by now, the Winnitron AU is at Freeplay in the Experimedia section of the State Library. What you might not know is that alongside the Freeplay event we’re launching two new games on the Winnitron AU.

Two new games.

First up is Culmination, a sweet and smooth fighting game that focuses on chaining combinations together with an elegant art style. Currently, the Winnitron AU is the only place you can play this game and as far as I know, will be the only place with a 2 player version, so make sure you check this one out!

The second game is Forget-Me-Not, which I like to think of as Pacman on steroids (pun not intended). This game is currently available on the App Store, so if you can’t get enough of it this weekend on the Winnitron AU, head over to that link to get it for your iPhone, iPad, etc!

That’s all from me for now, as I need to head to bed or I’ll be incredibly tired for tomorrow (and I most likely will be anyway!)

See you all there!

So today I finally installed the I-PAC controller which should alleviate some of the non-responsiveness issues relating to the use of a keyboard controller to drive input.

However, I did notice while I was there that the down arrow on player 2′s joystick is non-responsive outside of the input mechanism. While I can not be sure that this is not caused by a loose wire, I did test for this situation and didn’t find any circuitry issues while there.

As far as we can remember, the micro-switches responsible for detecting inputs are replaceable from the bottom of the control panel, and we hope to replace the switch in time for Freeplay ’11 tomorrow, but there is no guarantee of this happening.

While I was going to initially write this blog post with information that we potentially may have to go ahead to Freeplay ’11 without the down arrow working for player 2, it now seems very unlikely that this will actually be the case. If all goes according to plan, I will have successfully replaced the micro-switch by tomorrow afternoon.

In the event that we are unable to replace the micro-switch for Freeplay ’11, I’ll write another blog post regarding how we’re going to proceed on this matter, but for now, there’s no need to see this as a situation that will occur.
